Junior World Championships, Paris 2009

Lloyd Manning was Ireland’s sole representative at this year's Junior World Championships in Paris September 2009.Lloyd qualified for these championships when he reached the semi-final of the EJU Top Junior event in Prague in August.

New controversial IJF rules were piloted in the iconic Pierre De Coubertin Stadium by over 70 participating National Teams.Lloyd received a bye in the first round and was matched against the joint top seed and African Champion, BEN HASSEN, in the second round. After a slow start Lloyd started to dominate the Tunisian with a very tactically mature performance for a teenager.  He imposed a fighting style that the top seed could not handle and eventually forfeited the match by accumulating penalties to Hansoku Make. Lloyd’s last 16 contest was against a familiar opponent, Vitalii POPOVYCH from Ukraine. Lloyd and Popovych produced a thrilling semi final match back in Prague in August and the contest in Paris was every bit as exciting. Both Lloyd's fights were broadcast live on the web and were watched by many Irish Judo fans who witnessed just how close Lloyd came to winning what was a spectacular match. Popovych went on to win the Silver medal and defeated Russian, Georgian and French opponents well inside the distance and in a much more convincing manner than he could with the Macroom man.

Lloyd will now move into the senior ranks where he will undoubtedly again represent Ireland with distinction at the highest level of International competition.
