Junior World Cup Medal
Yamakwai's Matthew Rooney won Ireland's first male Junior World Cup medal in nearly 20 years in Coimbra, Portugal at the weekend. A fantastic result at anytime, but to achieve this standard in his first (of three) years as a Junior (-20) Judoka makes the result all the more impressive. He now joins a select band of Yamakwai players who continue to be the only EJU Junior medal winners in Ireland's history (Lisa Kearney 4 EJU medals 2006-08, Michelle Magill EJU Gold Germany 1991 and Ciaran Ward 5 EJU medals 1989-90).
Matthew is now the first of Ireland's Junior Team to qualify for the 2009 Junior European Championships to be held in Armenia this September and will hopefully be joined by Ian Byrne and Lloyd Manning who will continue to chase the qualifying standard in Lithuania 1-3 May.
